Abstract
During the past 20 years, a great variety of advances have been made in neonatal intensive care of preterm newborn.
But, preterm delivery is still the major cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity.
In order to investigate the various risk factors of preterm delivery and contribute to prevention of preterm delivery, we reviewed 501 cases of preterm delivery at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Inje Medical College, Seoul Paik
Hospital
from January 1985 to December 1992.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1. The incidence of preterm delivery was 7.17% on 1985, 5.9% on 1986, 9.7% on 1991, and 14.4% on 1992, increasing trends recently.
2. The preterm delivery was more frequent in mother above 35 years old (17.6%) than in mother below 35 years old.
3. The rate of preterm delivery was higher in high parity; in para 0 1, 7.7%, and in parity above 4, 21.4%.
4. The rate of preterm delivery was higher in previous high abortion history; in previous abortion 0, 7.0%, and in previous abortion above 3, 15.0%.
5. There was no significant difference in preterm delivery rate between high and low education group.
6. The rate of preterm deliery was higher in women with previous preterm birth, past still birth and postnatal death history.
7. The obstetric risk factors such as, multiple pregnancy, congenital anomaly, placenta previa, and PROM were associated with high incidence of preterm delivery.
8. The maternal systemic disease, pulmonary tuberculosis and chronic hypertension were associated with high incidence of preterm delivery.
9. Low-Apgar score at 1 minute and 5 minute was associated with preterm delivery.
